Notwithstanding thedeep and practical interest, and notwith-

standing the great technical importance to man of platinum and

the platinum metals, or of the platinum order, the minerals re-

lated to them are exceedingly insufficiently known. At every

stap we come across great blanks in our knowledge.

Despite

150 years' acquaintance with platinum we are still unable to explain the properties of crude platinum, or to determine all

its varities,

Exact knowledge of the chemical composition of these minerals is prevented by the difficulty of chemical analysis, which does not allow a comparison of a number of earlier observations with

present day ones.

It is not astonishing that analysis gives a very incomplete representation of the chemical composition of platinum ore graine. Thanks to this condition of analysis, science and technics are in a fog on the composition if the ordinary platinum ore_ so-called crude platinum and we cannot say how many minerals we include under this name. The chemistry of crude platinum is a mystery to us in many respects.

In virtue of the sharp difference inthe chemical character of osmium and ruthenius from other metals of the platin um order, it is quite possible that we have for osmic minerals, not the isomorphic mixture (08., Ru., Ir.,), but the osmides

and ruthenides of nature. -
